San Diego - San Diego Mesa College has been named a 2021 Equity Champion of Higher Education by The Campaign for College Opportunity for awarding Associate Degrees for Transfer (ADT) to Black and Latinx students. Colleges are recognized due to their actions to intentionally ensure that Black and Latinx students who have a transfer goal earn an ADT. This is determined via the percentage point gap (PPG), which identifies campuses, such as Mesa College, that are excelling in awarding ADTs to Latinx and Black students, relative to their campus wide ADT conferral rates. Across all California Community Colleges, Mesa is recognized as having a high proportion of degree or transfer seeking Black and Latinx students who received an ADT in the 2019-2020 academic year. This is achievement is indicative of the equity work in which Mesa College engages daily.

San Diego City and San Diego Mesa colleges were recognized today by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs for having produced the most Gilman scholarship recipients over the past twenty years amongst those colleges awarding associate degrees.

Great Minds in STEM (GMiS) has awarded Alexander Szeto of Northrop Grumman and a Mesa College Foundation Board Member, a 2021 Hispanic Engineer National Achievement Awards Conference (HENAAC) Award for Community Service at the GMiS 33rd Annual Conference held on October 18-20.

Mesa College student Raine Porter is the newest recipient of the College Reading & Learning Association’s (CRLA) Outstanding Tutor Award. Established in 1995 by CRLA’s International Tutor Training Program Certification (ITTPC) committee who review over 1200+ certified programs. The award is given annually to one undergraduate peer tutor, who contributes to the academic success of their peers. CRLA felt that Raine was a “true representative of what an outstanding tutor should be,” motivating and inspiring others through her passion and dedication to her work.

Today, Mesa College announced that over 100 “short-term” classes starting on October 18 still have seats available. Mesa College has over 100 classes that still have open seats, including courses in Black and Chicano Studies, Culinary, Drama, English, Exercise Science/Health, Fashion, GIS, History, Math, Multimedia, Philosophy, Psychology, Political Science and Web Development. Both on-campus and on-line classes are available, and most classes fulfill GE requirements for both the CSU and UC systems or allow students to earn a degree in Career Education.

On Thursday, August 26, for the first time in over 18 months, the San Diego Mesa College Art Gallery will host a Reception and Open House featuring four international artists. The Reception and Open House will be held from 11:00 am – 7:00 pm., and feature outdoor refreshments. From 12:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m., artist Gloria Muriel will be on-site at the gallery creating small drawings, which will be available for purchase for under $100.

The California Community Colleges Real Estate Education Center is delighted to present the 2021 Advancing Real Estate Education Award to K. Lee Steidel. With over fifteen years of community college teaching experience, Lee has served as an adjunct faculty member at Mesa College, San Diego City College and Fullerton College.

The Advancing San Diego (ASD) Internship Program, launched in Spring 2020aims to provide up to 100 fully subsidized internships at San Diego-based companies. This program supports companies with 100 employees or less, which comprise 98 percent of all businesses in San Diego, employ nearly two-thirds of San Diegans, and account for 70 percent of job growth. A vital issue for these companies has been a lack of time and resources to recruit the skilled talent necessary to continue their growth.
